Pai Gow Poker

This is a derivative of the poker game. It dates back to a couple of hundreds of years in ancient China and has become a popular game in modern day casinos. It was initially played with dominoes until the late 20th century when it was mated with poker.

It has a distinct advantage over poker in that the player’s only opponent is the dealer. Thus the player only has to compete with one person in order to win. It is an easy game to play. The dealer deals seven cards. The player must have two hands; one should be a five card hand whilst the other should be a two card hand. The five card hand should have a higher value than the two card hand. The player only wins if the value of both hands is higher than the dealer’s hands. If the value of both hands of the dealer and the player are equivalent then it is a tie but the dealer wins that round. If the player has a higher value on one hand or beats the dealer with one hand, the round is said to be a push with no winner.

Keno

This game also originated in ancient China although the name may have Latin of French origins. It has similarities to lottery or bingo games. Keno is played on a ticket with a field of 80 selection boxes numbered 1 to 80. There are five types of Keno tickets: the straight tickets, the combination tickets, the split tickets, the way tickets and the king tickets.

The straight ticket is the most commonly used ticket as the betting and selection of numbers is the easiest. The player wagers by selecting his numbers with an “X” from one to fifteen numbers and sometimes as many as twenty and waits for the draw. In live games the draw is done with numbered balls whilst online Keno is done electronically. Twenty balls are drawn randomly. A player wins when his numbers match the numbers drawn. If some of the numbers on the ticket match the numbers drawn then the player is paid accordingly.

Here is a basic Pai Gow Strategy:

Remember: Back = Five card hand Front = Two card hand

NO PAIR: Use your highest card in the back and your second and third highest in the front

ONE PAIR: Place the pair in back, and your highest other two cards in front.

TWO PAIR: Place your big in back and small pair in front. If you pir 7’s to10’s place both in back if you can put Ace in front. If your big pair is 2’s thru 6’s: Place both pairs in back if you can put King in front; else split the pairs

THREE PAIR: Big pair goes front.

THREE OF A KIND: Aces: Place one A and your highest card in front. If you get Kings and below: always place in Back.

TWO SETS: Pait from higher set goes front.

STRAIGHT, FLUSH or STRAIGHT FLUSH: If with no pair: Two highest cards go in front that leave a complete hand in back. If with Two Pair: Play the two pair strategy.

FULL HOUSE: Pair goes front

FOUR OF A KIND: Always split J through A. 7’s to 10’s: Place in back if you have Ace or King to go front;

FIVE ACES: Pair of Aces goes front.

Pai Gow is a form of poker which is played against the dealer. As a result, it is generally considered a casino game rather than a poker game. Origins of Pai Gow

How to Play

The first hand is ranked the same as any other poker hand, except that A-2-3-4-5 is ranked as the second highest straight, after 10-J-Q-K-A. The second hand can be a pair or it can simply be the highest cards available after the first hand is made. A 2-card hand that consists of a pair will automatically beat a 2-card hand that does not have a pair. If both dealer and player have pairs, the higher pair will win. If both have pairs of the same value, the dealer is the winner.

The Showdown
After arranging the hands, players are shown the dealer’s hand, and the hands are compared. The dealer’s five-card hand is compared to the player’s five-card hand and the dealer’s two-card hand is compared to the player’s two-card hand. If the dealer wins both hands, the house wins. If the player wins both hands, the player wins. If the dealer wins one and the player wins one, it is a push, and the money is returned to the player.

House Edge
Most casinos take a small rake when the player wins. This rake is usually 5% of the winnings, meaning that if the player bets $100 and wins, the casino will return $195, rather than the full $200. This is part of the house edge. The other way that the casinos make money on Pai Gow Poker is in the rule that lets the dealer win a tied hand. It is unusual for a dealer to have an identical hand to the player for the five-card hand, but for the two card hand, a combination of Ace-King, for example, is not uncommon. As a result, even with perfect strategy, the house has a slight edge. Compared to other casino table games, however, the house edge is relatively small.

Why Pai Gow is Great
Many gamblers enjoy Pai Gow Poker, because there is an element of strategy, rather than simply luck. Many other table games are only games of luck, and players have very little control over what occurs in the game.
